Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder is characterized by difficulties with emotional regulation, identity, and relationships. Many people with BPD traits are deeply sensitive, perceptive, and emotionally attuned, but may struggle with managing emotional intensity or feeling secure in relationships.

 

BPD often develops in the context of early relational trauma, chronic invalidation, or environments where emotional needs were not consistently met. These patterns are adaptations, not character flaws.

Common experiences associated with BPD

BPD can show up in different ways, including:

  • Intense emotional reactions that feel hard to control

  • Fear of abandonment or rejection

  • Rapid shifts in how you see yourself or others

  • Relationship patterns that feel unstable or overwhelming

  • Impulsivity in emotions, behaviours, or decisions

  • Chronic feelings of emptiness or loneliness

  • Strong self-criticism or shame

  • Difficulty trusting that relationships are secure

 

These experiences can be deeply distressing, especially when they repeat despite your best efforts.

A nervous system perspective

From a neuroscience and trauma-informed perspective, BPD is associated with heightened emotional sensitivity and differences in how the brain processes threat, attachment, and regulation. The emotional alarm system can activate quickly and intensely, while the systems responsible for calming and integration may struggle to keep up.

Therapy focuses on strengthening emotional regulation, increasing awareness of triggers, and building internal and relational safety.

  • Building emotional regulation and distress tolerance

  • Understanding attachment patterns and relationship dynamics

  • Strengthening identity and sense of self

  • Developing healthier communication and boundaries

  • Addressing shame, self-criticism, and trauma
