What is Adult ADHD?

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and self-regulation. While ADHD is often associated with childhood, many people continue to experience its effects into adulthood, or are only identified later in life.

In adults, ADHD can impact work, relationships, emotional wellbeing, and self-esteem. Many adults with ADHD are highly capable, creative, and insightful, yet struggle with consistency, organization, and managing mental and emotional overload.

Common experiences of adult ADHD

Adult ADHD can show up in different ways. Common experiences include:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention or staying focused

  • Procrastination or trouble starting tasks

  • Feeling mentally scattered or overwhel.

  • med

  • Forgetfulness or losing track of time

  • Restlessness or feeling constantly “on the go”

  • Impulsivity in decisions, spending, or conversations

  • Emotional intensity or quick shifts in mood

  • Chronic stress, burnout, or low self-esteem

These challenges are not a reflection of laziness or lack of effort. They are related to how the ADHD brain processes information and regulates attention and emotion.

Understanding ADHD from a nervous system perspective

ADHD involves differences in brain systems related to attention, motivation, executive functioning, and emotional regulation. These systems affect how tasks are initiated, how focus is sustained, and how emotions are managed.

Because of this, traditional productivity strategies often fail for people with ADHD, leading to frustration and shame. Therapy focuses on working with your brain rather than against it.

How therapy can help with adult ADHD

ADHD therapy is not about forcing yourself to be more disciplined. It is about understanding how your mind works and building systems that actually support you.

In therapy, we may work on:

  • Developing practical strategies for organization, planning, and follow-through

  • Improving emotional regulation and stress tolerance

  • Addressing shame, self-criticism, and burnout

  • Strengthening self-understanding and self-advocacy

  • Exploring how ADHD impacts relationships, work, and identity

Tools are practical and meant to be used in real life, not just discussed.
